Biography

Associate Professor Soumya Basu is a highly experienced Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist based in Victoria, Australia, with more than 20 years of clinical experience across tertiary public services, private practice, and academic medicine. He is the Clinical Director of the Child and Adolescent Program at the Victorian Centre for Child and Youth Mental Health (VCcYMH)and holds academic appointments as Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological Medicine at Monash University.

Associate Professor Basu specialises in the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with complex mental health and neurodevelopmental conditions, with particular expertise in Attention‑Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), developmental disabilities, developmental trauma, and early psychosis. His clinical approach emphasises early intervention, comprehensive assessment, collaborative care with families, and evidence‑based treatment, tailored to the developmental and cultural context of each young person.
He completed his medical degree with honours, followed by specialist psychiatric training (DPM and MD) in India, before undertaking advanced training in Australia and obtaining Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP), including Faculty recognition in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. His professional background across multiple healthcare systems has strongly informed his interest and expertise in transcultural psychiatry and culturally responsive mental health care.


Associate Professor Basu has held senior consultant and leadership roles across Victoria, including 14 years as a Consultant Psychiatrist at Latrobe Regional Hospital, and ongoing involvement with Monash Health’s Early in Life Mental Health Services. In addition to his clinical work, he is deeply committed to medical education and training, contributing extensively to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervision of psychiatry trainees, and examiner roles within professional colleges.


He has an active interest in clinical research, with over 40 peer‑reviewed publications and regular presentations at national and international conferences. His research interests include youth mental health, early intervention, neurodevelopmental disorders, developmental trauma, early psychosis, and transcultural child psychiatry. He is also a recognised advocate for improved understanding of Internet Gaming Disorder and the impact of digital behaviours on child and adolescent mental health.


Associate Professor Basu is multilingual, providing consultations in English, Bengali, Hindi, and Urdu, and is experienced in working with families from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. His private practice is grounded in a warm, respectful, and family‑centred approach, supporting children, adolescents, and their families through careful assessment, thoughtful formulation, and compassionate care.
